Number one garden moocher is probably the rabbit. Thankfully I have a black lab and I think merely owning a dog keeps them from hanging around too long. However, this lab sheds an exorbitant amount of fur. Now, apparently rabbits and chipmunks won't nest in an area that appears to be claimed by another animal. So I was advised to place her fur around the strawberry patch. And as you can see above, these strawberries were left alone to ripen in the sun until I was ready to pick them. Much better than last year where I had tried picking them a little early in my attempt to beat the rabbits.
Second are birds, that can be avoided with a typical net, Haven't bothered with that yet, so far the birds appear to be leaving these alone for now.
Third pests are ants and here's another one of my favorite tips, because these ants keep getting into my bird feeders and shed. Sprinkle cream of wheat around the sites where you see ants. The ants will eat them and carry them back to their nests. The fiber in the cream of wheat will absorb all the water in the ants, thereby killing them. It does sound pretty cruel but it beats insecticide.
Though there are no pesticides or insecticides, I still recommend washing them thoroughly.
