I get it. Sugar makes things taste good. "A spoonful of sugar..." and what not. But that makes things particularly frustrating for me, as I found out earlier in order to make some of my supplements go down easier somebody was thoughtful enough to coat it in Sucralose.
So am I going to dump my vitamins down the drain and go on the Atkins diet? No. My general rule of thumb is to follow common sense and not to pour money down the drain. My love of mexican food will keep me eating soft taco shells for life. I also have no intentions of breaking my chewing gum habit. I guess that's why I had the wisdom to foresee that I would be living A Life Less Refined and not Completely Unrefined.
Even as I looked into trying to find semi-sweet mini chocolate chips to make cookies with, I was hoping I'd find something without regular sugar in it. I came across one that said evaporated cane sugar. I thought that was an interesting term seeing as in order to make regular table sugar you have to heat up the molasses and evaporate the liquid out of it so that you end up with the crystalline sugars left over. I did a little online research to find that my hunch was right on that one. This brought up an interesting dilemma for me. Just how many exceptions am I going to make for bread, vitamins, gum and now chocolate chips?
I decided I'm going to compromise with myself. No chocolate chips during the 90 days that I initially signed up for. By the way I'm down to 50 days left. Also minimal bread encounters, and I'll have to look into maybe making my own bread. And of course I forgot to buy almond flour at the grocery store to do this. I don't think I'm going to be very successful anyway, until I get an oven that is baking worthy. We're in the process of fixing that little problem. But fortunately with the popularity of the Paleo Diet (short for Paleolithic) recipes are abound for home made gluten free bread that is free of table sugar.
Incidentally, I just learned an interesting fact about sucrose that has nothing to do with food. As I was singing in the shower, I accidentally swallowed a bit of face wash. I immediately thought of what happened to Charlotte from Sex and the City when she let her guard down while showering in Mexico. But at the same time noticed there was a hint of sweetness to the face wash. I read the bottle for ingredients and found Sucrose listed as one of the first ingredients in my face wash. Now there is a warning on the bottle right under the ingredients that says to seek medical attention if it's accidentally swallowed so I'm pretty sure that they didn't just throw sugar in there to make it tempting to the same kind of people that grew up eating paint chips. It's used as a skin conditioner, which explains why my skin has been so soft since I switched to this new wash. And from now on I might have to pause in the middle of a song while washing my face.
